We’re in Canada eh! Rain, sleet, or snow we are probably open. If you’re still not sure, check our Facebook page for any immediate updates and instructions. We follow the lead of the local Parks and Recreation Department. If they are open, then we are too – and they are rarely closed!
AQUASTAR allows you to watch your children in a comfortable environment while they enjoy their lessons in the pools! We encourage you to sit on the benches or chairs where provided on the pool deck. If you have a question or a comment please feel free to speak to your Head Instructor.
Please help us prevent a pool fouling which causes a temporary pool closure. Two swim diapers with a snug fit around the legs and waist are REQUIRED for all swimmers under 36 months, as well as older children who are not fully potty-trained. Layer 1 can be any reusable or disposable swim diaper that you feel most comfortable with! The outer layer must be a reusable, cloth swim diaper. We recommend the “Happy Nappy!” Forgot something or have questions about sizing and fit? Let us know! We can help!
No Shoes – No Problem! For everyone’s health and safety there are no outdoor shoes permitted in the change room areas or on the pool deck. You are welcome to bring indoor shoes however!
Absolutely! We love cameras! Don’t hesitate to come out to the deck and take pictures of your little fish! If you get a great picture or video, remember to share it with us on Facebook and on Instagram!
While we will try our best to accommodate requests for a particular instructor, we cannot guarantee them as the majority of our instructors have schedules that change every few months. But not to worry! All of our instructors teach the same skills, just with their own personal flair! In fact, exposure to different instructors will help your children progress and succeed at a faster rate.
Crying children are a very normal part of swimming lessons. We see it all the time with beginners – so don’t feel like you’re the only one! At AQUASTAR, if a child is crying, the Instructors will help out with the class and give your child the one-on-one attention they need. In some situations where your child really can’t stop crying to get your attention, we’ll let you know that it might be time to watch from our observation decks that allow you to cheer them on from where you can’t be seen! Just be ready with a towel and a big hug for your child after the lesson.
Our Parent and Tot Program is recommended for children between the ages of 2 to 23 months old and babies love the warm water of our pools. While it is up to you as a parent to decide when is the best time for you and your child to start swimming, you might be interested in knowing that our youngest students are no more than a few weeks old! Classes without mom or dad in the water start when your child is 2 years of age.
No refunds will be issued for missed classes. Registrants are allowed to reschedule their classes as long as they are done before the 24 hours reschedule policy.
You may cancel your enrollment up to 24 hours before your first day of lessons for a full refund. We are able to provide refunds by Visa or Mastercard. Cancellations during the session will be charged for lessons taken; there is no cancellation fee. The remaining balance is pro-rated and returned to you as a credit toward future lessons. When you are ready to re-register the credit on your file will be deducted from the total cost of the program you are registering for. Still, have a question about cancelling? Please speak to one of our instructors, we would be more than happy to work with you and your situation.
You should bring a bathing suit and towel. Goggles are recommended and two swim diapers are mandatory if your child is under 36 months (see “Does my child need to wear a swim diaper?” for more details).
We encourage all participants to arrive early enough to use the restroom before class begins. For all participants who are not potty trained, we require the use of plastic swim diapers worn over a regular diaper. For children who are not comfortable using the restroom on their own, we ask that you remain on the pool deck in the event that your child needs to use the restroom. If you choose to leave the pool area, you MUST give our Head Instructor permission to assist your child to the restroom. As a reminder, children over the ages of 5 cannot use the opposite sex locker room. For sanitary reasons, please do not change diapers on the pool deck –diaper changing stations are available in the locker rooms.
What do I do if my child is misbehaving? Most all disciplinary problems are addressed and taken care of by either our swim instructors or our Head Instructor. We use positive reinforcement to encourage appropriate class behaviours such as self-identification of the problem, warnings and time-outs. If our instructor does not have success with this approach we may approach you in an effort to find a better
method that is more effective for your child. We ask that you teach, talk about and review appropriate class behaviour and pool rules with your child. We encourage our parents to lead by example and to help children understand “respect” for the water, classmates and instructors.
Most students thrive and tend to progress faster with a more intensive program of lessons of 2-3 times per week. With once a week lessons, children tend to forget too much in between lessons. Intensive programs of everyday lessons are also effective and work best for families who vacation or have busy schedules filled with summer activities. Research has shown that skills are better acquired with regular intensive practice rather than intermittent practice. Our experience over the past 11 years has yielded the same conclusion.
We recommend between 8-12 lessons. Children need to build on the progress of past lessons. It can take a few lessons before things ‘click’ and children start to learn at a faster pace. Fewer than 8 lessons and you run the risk of cutting short the progress just as they are starting to get the hang of their swimming skills and develop their confidence.
The million-dollar question that everyone wants to know the answer to. Without first being in the water with your child, it is hard to give a definitive answer, as every child (and adult) progresses at different rates. After the instructor has been with your child for a few lessons, they will be able to give you a more informed answer that can only come with getting to know your child in the water.
Trial lessons are not a good indicator of the progress that will be made throughout a series of 8 or more lessons. The first lesson can be a bit awkward or scary for some students as this is where the bonding and rapport between student and teacher begin to form. It can take 2-3 lessons for the visible progress and connection between student and teacher to be made. If for whatever reason things are not working out with the lessons or your instructor, we will absolutely find you another instructor or refund your money.
As per family member, we are only allowing 1 20MINS FREE TRIAL from AQUASTAR Swim School. We understand that not many parents will be willing to spend such amount upfront for swimming yet not knowing whether the instructor is suited for their child. We want to give our best to provide the trust and confidence of our instructor so you and your child can truly experience the joy of moving in the water.
AQUASTAR swim school only allows 2 students at most to learn in a 1-hour session to ensure the best quality and safety and confidence for your child. If 2 students are in a different level, AQUASTAR instructors will suggest to the parents to split the 1-hour class into 30mins each for their child. This can ensure that both your children are benefiting from the class. Another option would be to purchase the package and have both your children take the full 1-hour session each after another. We strive to offer the best fit and quality for each individual family. If the parents are unsure of the decision, please speak to your instructor for advice, we will do our best to help make a decision best suited to your families needs.
If a family member has purchased either the GOLD or PLATINUM package, they may share those classes only with direct family members. In our registration system, please write down all the information to provide all necessary details for AQUASTAR to keep track in our records. AQUASTAR reserves the right to refuse membership to any applicant and membership may be terminated for such things as failure to comply with these conditions and regulations or abuse of your package.
Yes, AQUASTAR understands that many parents want an instructor best suited for their child and their learning ability. Hence, if you notice that the child is crying because they have never met, I would suggest giving time for the child to get to know the instructor before making an early decision in switching to another instructor.
We understand that swimming can be a scary moment for kids, so as for the parents, please be patient with your child and the instructor to will take care of it with love and care.
